Description
This barn, located approximately 25 metres north of Aylmers House, dates back to the early 17th century. It is timber framed and covered with weatherboarding, topped with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The structure consists of four bays arranged roughly in a northeast-southwest orientation, featuring an aisle on the northwest side and a midstrey in the second bay from the northeast. There are lean-to extensions on both sides of the midstrey and at the southwest end. The southeast elevation has four windows that were added in the 20th century. The roof is hipped at the southwest end and half-hipped at the northeast end.
Architectural details include jowled posts, straight tiebeams, and arched braces connecting the tiebeams to the arcade plate. Inside, there is heavy studding with straight braces across the upper angles of the walls, which are not trenched. The roof features queen struts with clasped purlins, and there is curved wind bracing to the purlin in just one bay, which contains the midstrey. This barn is contemporary with Aylmers House and shares similar construction features, particularly the unusual wall bracing. Although it was reported to be in poor condition around 1920, it has since been completely reclad while the frame remains unaltered.
