Description
The Studio is a 16th-century barn that was partially converted into a studio by the artist Aida Palmer in the late 19th century, using the Arts and Crafts style. The remainder of the building was converted into a dwelling in the 20th century. It features a timber frame with rendered panels on a brick plinth and a plain tile roof. The structure has a three-bay frame with a midstrey, flanked by lean-to additions, and a central stack. The roof is half-hipped, and the principal frame members are exposed on the exterior, showcasing jowled posts with arch braces.
Throughout the building, there are 20th-century two-light casements, some of which have recent fake leading. The end bay of the garden front includes an oriel window above recent herringbone brick nogged panels, replacing a conservatory that has been removed. Inside, there is an inserted floor, and the galleried full-height studio occupies one bay, featuring high-quality timber detailing. The walls and ceiling have diagonal boarding.
A "screens passage" separates the three bays, with four-centred openings adorned with carved spandrels and painted landscape panels above. There is a bracketed gallery with a carved rail and chamfered balusters, as well as a carved rail above the entrance to the former conservatory, supported by trefoil posts with moulded capitals. The building also includes an ovolo-moulded four-centred brick fireplace. Aida Palmer, who exhibited from 1884, lived in the adjacent house, Turnours Hall.
