Description

Fitzwilliam Cottages are two almshouses dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with later alterations. They are constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with a red plain tiled roof. The front is bricked up in red brick, and there is a red brick buttress on the left side. The cottages are single storey with attics and feature a four-window range of 19th-century casements with glazing bars. There are two boarded doors with plain surrounds, and exposed timber beams are visible next to the left door. Each door has a large brass plaque stating "Ye 15th century." There are 19th-century red brick diagonal chimney shafts on both the left and right sides, along with a moulded brick eaves cornice. Two dormers at the rear provide light to the attics. The cottages were built from a bequest by Anne Sidney, Lady Fitzwilliam, whose will was proved in 1602.
