Description

This is an outbuilding, originally stables, located to the north-west of Hill Hall. It dates to the late 18th century, with additions made in the early 20th century and conversion work in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with painted ashlar dressings and has a hipped roof covered in plain tiles.

The east-facing courtyard front has nine openings arranged in a 3:3:3 pattern. A slightly projecting section in the centre features three pairs of glazed double doors. This is flanked by three original round-headed arches with painted keystones and impost bands. The outer arches each contain a stable door, the central arches are blank, and all feature large round-headed windows with glazing bars. A similar round archway connects this building to the main house to the south. Set at a right angle to the north is a two-story garage wing with large garage doors and two metal-frame windows. The south front has a small sash window with glazing bars set within a round-headed arch with a keystone, flanked by two blind windows. The rear elevation includes a single-story lean-to addition with an artificial tile roof, and features irregular fenestration including glazing bar sashes, doors, and garage doors. The interior was not inspected as part of the listing process.

This outbuilding forms one side of the service courtyard to the north-west of Hill Hall, and group value derives from its contribution to the wider historic landscape of the estate.
