Description
Tymperleys is a building originally constructed in the 15th to 16th century, set back from the road in its garden and facing south, accessible through an archway in No 7. The building has been much restored and features two storeys and attics, with a timber-framed and plastered exterior, exposing the timbering on the front. The roofs are tiled, and there are three gabled dormers. The upper storey projects on the south front. There is an original doorway at the west end of the first floor with a four-centred head, which is now blocked and likely once led to an external stairway. The building has mostly modern windows. Inside, there are original moulded ceiling beams and a 17th-century staircase. A plaque over the gateway indicates that this was the home of William Gilberd, MA 1544-1603, recognized as the Father of Electrical Science. Nos 2 to 14 form a group with Tymperleys.
