Description
The Former Church of the Holy Trinity is located on Trinity Street and is particularly notable for its fine pre-Conquest west tower, which was likely built in the mid-11th century. This tower is constructed mainly of Roman brick and features three stages with a pyramidal tiled roof. The west doorway has a triangular head, and the windows are round-headed. The tower was added to an earlier church dating from around 1000, of which only the west wall remains. The rest of the building primarily dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and underwent significant restoration in 1886. Inside, there is an interesting mural alabaster monument dedicated to William Gilberd, who lived from 1544 to 1603 and was known for his research into electricity.
