Description
Brickhouse Farmhouse was built around 1780 and originally had a timber frame. The red brick cladding was added in 1885 after earthquake damage. The house is two storeys high, with a cellar and attics, topped by a red plain tile pyramid roof. It features a three-window range of late 18th century double hung vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars, and the centre first floor window has a semi-circular head. There are gabled dormers on each side of the roof and a late 19th century porch. A late 19th century single storey service range in red brick with a red plain tile roof and crested ridge tiles is located on the west side. Inside, there is extensive late 18th century detailing, including a staircase with a wreathed handrail, reeded balusters, and carved spandrels, as well as carved door linings and fire surrounds. The first floor has early 19th century cast iron fire surrounds. The hallway features a plain vaulted "gothic" plaster ceiling, and there are two ogee doors with pineapple finials. An original semi-circular fanlight has been re-used above the west door.
