Description
The Employment Exchange, formerly known as Stockwell House, is a good 17th-century building with a fine early 18th-century red brick front. It has two storeys and attics, as well as cellars, and is constructed with timber framing and plaster, topped with tiled roofs. The front features a brick eaves cornice and a six-window range of double-hung sashes with glazing bars in cased frames, all set beneath flat rubbed brick arches. There is a decorative band, and the central doorcase is adorned with a pediment head, scroll brackets, a shouldered architrave, and a six-panel door. On the north side, there is an oriel bay upper window with a Venetian attic window above. Inside, the building retains 17th-century features, including a staircase and ceiling beams.
