Description

The Viaduct, completed in 1849, is a notable structure located on Chappel Colchester Road. It is constructed from locally made yellow stock brick and is oriented from north-north-east to south-south-west. The viaduct features 32 arches, each with a span of 30 feet and a height of 75 feet, contributing to a total length of 1,060 feet and a rise of 9 feet from one end to the other. Designed by P Bruff and built by contractor G Wythes, it was originally intended to carry two tracks, although it has only ever been used for one. The construction cost was £32,000, utilizing over 7 million bricks.
