Description

The war memorial in the churchyard of St Mary's Church is a Grade II listed structure commemorating those who lost their lives in the First World War, with additions for the Second World War and conflicts in Northern Ireland. Made of granite, it features a stone base.

The memorial is designed as a 3.35-meter tall Latin cross, with a slightly tapering cross shaft that rests on a sloping plinth, which is supported by four square steps atop a high stone base. The sides of the plinth bear inscriptions in black lettering.

The inscription on the west face reads: "IN MEMORY OF/THE BRAVE MEN OF WIVENHOE/WHO LOST THEIR LIVES THROUGH/THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/(NAMES)/'LEST WE FORGET'". The north face honors those from the parish who gave their lives in the Second World War, stating: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY/OF THOSE OF THIS PARISH/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/THE WORLD WAR OF 1939-1945/(NAMES)". The south face commemorates Private James Houston of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, who was killed in Northern Ireland on December 13, 1989.

Unveiled on June 19, 1921, by Lieutenant Colonel T Gibbons, this memorial holds significant historical and cultural importance at both local and national levels. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the World Wars and has additional interest due to its connection with the Grade II* listed St Mary's Church.
