Description
The Church of St John, part of the Church of England, was built in 1864 by architect Arthur Blomfield. It is constructed of red and gault brick with stone dressings and features peg tile gabled roofs. This building showcases High Victorian Gothic "Early" details, including a nave, chancel, and a northern porch, all with hipped roofs and a circular bell turret topped with a conical roof. The chancel has a straight east end and is slightly narrower than the nave. Inside, the walls are made of red and gault brick, with chancel and tower arches composed of two orders. These arches are supported by detached ringed Purbeck marble shafts that feature 'wind blown' foliated capitals. The nave roof includes double side purlins supported by principal rafters, with saldive bracing that encloses sexfoils. The font is drum-shaped, resting on a central cylindrical shaft, and is surrounded by eight detached peripheral shafts made of polished marble. The drum of the font is decorated with arabesques of pitch inlay.
