Description
Carew Terrace is a modest, symmetrical terrace of 18 houses built between 1841 and 1842 of grey gault brick. The terrace is located on New London Road. The end houses, each with three bays, project slightly forward, as do the two central houses. The roofs are hipped with slate tiles, and feature flat eaves and plain coursed brick chimney stacks. The intervening houses have two bays each. The windows are revealed sash windows with intact glazing bars, block sills, and flat gauged brick arches. Pilastered doorways retain their original panelled doors and rectangular fanlights, all topped with shallow cornice hoods. Number 147, originally built as a public house, and Number 161 have central pilastered doorways with restricted reveals. The central pair of houses have coupled doorways with similar detailing. The interiors remain unaltered, featuring arched openings leading to a graceful staircase with a slight curve to the cut string and a continuous handrail. Carew Terrace was one of the first terraces to be built on the privately developed New London Road.
