Description
The Three Compasses Public House is a public house located in West Hanningfield, dating from the 15th and 19th centuries. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure with clay plain tiled gable roofs. The building consists of parallel ranges, with the western range from the 19th century showcasing various casement windows. The eastern range, which dates back to the 15th century, includes sash and casement windows, a large red brick stack, and a catslide tiled roof on the east side. This eastern range is a jettied crosswing from the first half of the 15th century, with an inserted stack from the 16th century. The roof structure contains a cross quadrate crown post with arched braces, collar purlin, and collars. The floor joists at the jettied end, which are now underbuilt, have central tenons into the bridging joist.
