Description
The Church of St Mary and St Edward is a small church with origins dating back to the 12th century, significantly altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. One of its most notable features is the early medieval timber-framed belfry, which is believed to date from the first half of the 14th century. The belfry has a cruciform plan and is weatherboarded, with the arms of the cross consisting of two stages and low-pitched gabled roofs. The outer walls of the tower were likely originally octagonal. The upper part of the tower retains very early trefoil heavy wood tracery and is topped by an octagonal shingled broach spire.
Inside the church, there is a remnant of a 12th-century window in the north wall of the nave. The south aisle and arcade were constructed around 1330, while the chancel dates to the early 16th century and features two good brick windows in the north wall. The south porch is from the 15th century and includes a 14th-century door, while the west door is from the 15th century. The interior also boasts a small octagonal carved font from the 14th century, a dug-out chest from the 13th to 14th centuries, and a 17th-century altar rail with alternating twisted and turned balusters.
