Description

The Old Tide Mill and attached dam wall, located off Chelmsford Road in Battlesbridge, is a late 18th-century former tide mill now used as a warehouse with offices. The building is constructed of brick and features a red plain tiled roof. The south side has a weatherboarded lucam and gable, while the north gable faces the River Crouch and is connected to the dam wall. The structure stands three storeys high with a loft and has a three-window range on the return wall, primarily consisting of vertically sliding sashes with glazing bars. It includes various tie plates, bargeboards on the gable, and a two-light window in the lucam. The ground and first floors have tall double vertically boarded doors, with the first-floor doors featuring a segmental head.

Attached to the west is a lower range outbuilding in an L shape, covered with red pantiled roofs. This gabled southern range has five three-light windows with segmental arches on the right return, a two-window range, and a chimney stack on the gable end. The dam wall, primarily made of red brick and topped with stone coping, has openings for tide control gates and extends north across the River Crouch. Although it is no longer a working mill, it remains a rare survival in Essex, as noted in the Batsford Guide to Industrial Archaeology in East Anglia by J. Booker.
