Description
This building is a granary and drying kiln, now converted into a house, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick, featuring a red pantiled west range and a grey slate hipped main range with a kiln to the east. The west range is a single storey, while the central main range and kiln are two storeys high. The left range has a central upper window with shutters and two vertically boarded doors. The central range includes an eaves band and two recessed arches, each with segmental headed windows on both the ground and first floors. There is a tall two-light window on the first floor, and a 20th-century door with a hipped porch located below this window. The building has four tie plates. The former kiln is topped with a tall pyramidal roof and a timber windcowl, featuring a two-light window on the first floor at the front and on the return. The ground floor has 20th-century windows on both the front and return. The river-facing side also has similar recessed arches. This structure was once used in connection with the tide mill and is considered a rare survival in Essex, as noted in the Batsford Guide to Industrial Archaeology in East Anglia by J. Booker.
