Description

Cuckoos is a 17th-century timber-framed and plastered house located on Little Baddow Church Road. It has two storeys, with the upper storey jettied at the west end, supported by a moulded bressumer. The ground storey features exposed timber framing. The windows are 20th-century casements, and the roof is tiled and hipped at the east end. Notably, Thomas Hooker and John Elliot, pioneers of New England, both lived here and started a school in the building. In 1630, Hooker was called before the court of High Commission but escaped to Holland and sailed to Boston, New England, in 1633.
