Description

Southborough House is a large house built in 1908 by C H B Quennell for Francis Crittall, the metal window manufacturer. Its design is in the Arts and Crafts style. It is constructed of brick, rendered externally, and has tiled roofs. The northwest and southwest elevations feature Dutch gables with central diamond patterns. The house is two storeys high with attics. It retains its original metal window ranges, with projecting bays on the western corner and a panelled metal conservatory. A detached garage replicates the house's design. A metal garden gate in a Modern style is also present.

Inside, original features remain, including wood-panelled walls in the hall, a wooden staircase with a window seat on the landing, and a wood-panelled dining room featuring metal strapwork and doorcases. The dining room also has a decorative plaster frieze and ceiling, while the living room ceiling features plasterwork. An original fireplace is found in the north bedroom, and a concealed wall lighting unit in the east bedroom. The study, dressing room, and kitchen contain metal cupboards. A metal 'V' shaped window is located at the rear.
