Description

Jarvis Hall is a house dating from around 1400, with later alterations and additions, including work from the early 19th century. It features a timber frame with plaster, and has a moulded eaves cornice. The roof is hipped and covered with red plain tiles. There are several chimney stacks: a red brick stack on the right ridge and left hip, a gault stack at the rear left, and a gable end stack serving the brewhouse. The building has a square plan with three interlocking hipped roofs from two parallel ranges, with an earlier range positioned at right angles. There is a single-storey brewhouse at the rear right.

The house is two storeys high and has a three-window range of tripartite vertically sliding sashes with horns and glazing bars, along with a central first-floor single light vertically sliding sash featuring painted glass. The entrance has a central four-panelled door with a glass toplight and a fanlight above, sheltered by a flat canopy supported by brick piers.

Jarvis Hall consists of four separate builds. At the northeastern corner (rear right) is a truncated solar crosswing from around 1400, which has jowled storey posts and a two-armed cross quadrate crown post roof. The front range (south) contains a large chimney stack and likely represents a 17th-century rebuilding of the former open hall. The roof of this section largely dates back to the 1400 phase, featuring sooted hall rafters and collars that have been reused over the two-storey block. The southern range is from the early 19th century, with a late 19th-century extension at the rear. The ground floor includes six-panelled doors with moulded surrounds.
