Description

This milestone, dating from the 18th century, is located 13 meters west of The Hermitage on Shenfield Road in Brentwood. It is made of Portland stone and stands 70 cm high with a square section. The milestone is set diagonally and has a reduced rear arris. It has been rotated, with the inscription now on the rear west face. The front has been cut back to serve as a base for a metal post, of which a remnant remains at the top. Due to weathering and size reduction, the inscription is mostly illegible, but the letters "LES" and "VII" from "MILES" can still be discerned, along with other illegible inscriptions on the other faces.
