Description

The Cart Lodge and Granary, now used as a workshop, garage, and loft, dates from around 1700. It is timber-framed and covered in weatherboarding, with infill of painted red brick laid in Flemish bond, and has a roof of 20th-century red tiles. The building has a rectangular plan with two bays facing southeast. To the northwest, it adjoins a later agricultural building that lacks architectural interest.

Originally, the ground floor consisted of two open bays facing southeast, with timber framing and weatherboarding on the sides and back. The sides have been infilled with 18th or early 19th-century brickwork, with brick piers replacing the former posts at the south and east corners, while retaining a post in the middle of each side and all three posts of the rear wall. The front of the left bay has been enclosed with 20th-century brickwork and a window, and there is an external wooden stair leading to the loft above it. The right bay features a plain vehicle door, while the left has a plain boarded door. The roof is hipped.

Inside, the structure has a hardwood frame that is fully jointed and pegged, demonstrating high-quality craftsmanship. There is primary straight bracing in the rear wall of the ground floor and throughout the loft. The binding and bridging beams are plain, and the joists are of vertical section, jointed to them with soffit tenons and diminished haunches. The loft floor is fully boarded.
