Description

Shops Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 17th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It features a timber-framed structure that has been rendered in the 20th century, adorned with large moulded motifs. The roof is covered with 20th century peg tiles and the building has a rectangular plan. There are four windows, all of which are 20th century wooden diamond latticed casements. An off-centre grey red brick stack with two attached shafts is located to the east, while a minor stack is found to the west against a gable, which is enclosed by a 20th century lean-to addition. The door is off-centre to the west and is a boarded type set in a simple gabled porch.

Inside, the farmhouse contains three rooms, each featuring deep sectioned ceiling joists with diminished haunched tenons and pendant soffits. The principal stack has two back-to-back fireplaces, both with timber lintels, although they have been considerably rebuilt. On the first floor, there is primary bracing of the wall framing, a bladed scarf in the wall plate, and a mullioned window in the east gable that retains three mullions but lacks a shutter groove. The original position of the front door is unclear, but it likely served as a lobby entrance. The rear of the farmhouse is similar to the front, also rendered and featuring a four-window range. Additionally, a 19th century bake oven projects from the east end gable, topped with a small stack.
