Description
Brick House is an 18th-century house situated on the south-east side of The Green in Finchingfield. The building is constructed of plum brick, primarily in a header bond, with red brick dressings and a roof of handmade red clay tiles. It has a long main range facing north, with two rear wings that create a half-H shaped plan. There is one axial brick chimney stack and an external stack at the left end of the building.
The house has two storeys and a seven-window front, featuring 18th-century sash windows of twelve lights, each with a flat brick arch above. Some windows contain crown glass. The central entrance has a six-panel door set within a moulded brick doorcase surmounted by a pediment resting on heavy consoles carved with foliage. The door is accessed by four stone steps. A band of three courses of red brick runs along the first-floor level, and a moulded brick cornice sits below a plain parapet. Brick copings are present on the gables. A dentilled cornice is visible below the eaves on the left return wall of the rear wing.
A cast iron railing, approximately one metre from the front elevation, runs across the entire front of the house and returns to the building at each end. The railing consists of eight stanchions designed to resemble cannon, with wrought iron spearhead bars at a height of approximately one metre.
