Description
This barn, located approximately 55 metres south-east of Clees Hall, dates from the late 15th century to early 16th century. It features a timber frame and a thatched roof, with valleys made of handmade red clay tiles and an aisle roofed with corrugated iron. The barn consists of six bays aligned east to west, with a 17th-century midstrey to the south of the western bay. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (RCHM) reported that it was originally ten bays and 120 feet long, with the four western bays later removed, reportedly to North America. Initially, the barn did not have aisles, but an aisle was added to the north in the 18th century. The structure includes jowled posts, heavy studding, and girts in the east and south walls, as well as edge-halved and bridled scarfs in the wallplates and a queen post roof. One pair of arched braces to the tiebeam remains, while others have been replaced by hanging knees in the 17th or 18th century. Some wattle and daub is present in the south wall, and the eastern bay has been bricked and floored in the 20th century. The barn is situated on a moated site.
