Description
This building is a granary and cartlodge dating from the 18th century, located 40 metres south-west of Elms House Farmhouse. It is constructed with a timber frame, weatherboarded, and has a roof made of corrugated iron. The structure features four equal cart bays that open to the north, along with a shorter bay for stairs at the eastern end. It is a single storey with an attic used as a granary, topped with a gambrel roof that is half-hipped at both ends. There is a window opening at each end on the granary floor, although the shutters or casements are missing. The frame is made entirely of high-quality hardwood. The transverse beams are supported at each end by wide bolted knees and in the middle by a samson post with arched braces on each side, which are morticed and pegged. The joists are plain and have a vertical section, with primary straight bracing in the walls and a clasped purlin roof. This building is noted for being an exceptionally complete and well-built example of its type.
