Description
Terling Hall Farmhouse is a house dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The house features a 2-bay hall that faces north, with a late 16th-century external stack at the right end and a garage extension beyond, which is roofed with red clay 'Roman' tiles. To the left is a 3-bay crosswing that has an internal stack and is jettied at the front, displaying one plain brace.
The north elevation has a range of three 20th-century casement windows. Below the jetty, there are the sill and head of a former oriel window from the late 16th century, both of which are moulded and show mortices for moulded mullions and intermediate saddle bars. Inside the crosswing, the first collar and the end of the collar-purlin of a crownpost roof can be seen projecting through the plaster.
The original rear elevation, which now serves as the entrance, has a range of three 20th-century casement windows and a half-glazed door with a bracketed hood. The hall features a late 16th-century inserted floor, with chamfered axial and transverse beams that have lamb's tongue stops, and a smoke-blackened roof that was originally of crownpost construction, although the crownpost and collar-purlin are missing. The crosswing has hollow-chamfered posts and girts with step stops, but the roof was not inspected.
