Description

Newmans is a house dating from the late 15th century, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, though some framing is exposed on the right side. The roof is covered with handmade red clay tiles. The building has an L-plan layout, featuring a three-bay main range that faces south, with an axial chimney stack located one bay from the left end, and an irregular wing extending to the rear on the right. There are single-storey extensions from the 18th or 19th century at the back of the main range. The house stands two storeys tall.

The corner bay includes a late 19th-century shopfront that is currently disused, featuring two arched shop windows with the mullions removed, doors on either side (one half-glazed and one with four panels), and a fascia supported by four scrolled brackets. On the ground floor, there are two early 19th-century sash windows with 16 lights, while the first floor has three sash windows. The roof of the crosswing is hipped.

Inside, there is a full-length underbuilt jetty, moulded beams and joists (with carved foliate stops present only in the left bay), jowled posts, and a late 16th-century framed ceiling over the first floor of the left bay, featuring an ovolo-moulded beam and chamfered joists with step stops. The crownpost roof of the crosswing is visible, with axial braces supporting the crownposts. Access to the roof of the main range is not available. The building is described by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments as The Old Toll House.
