Description

St Margarets School, which was formerly the stables to Gosfield Hall, is an infants school built in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of red brick and features red plain tiled roofs. It has a half H-plan layout with gabled forward crosswings and a prominent gable at the center of the main block. There are red brick chimneys at the gable apex of the crosswings, with a total of six chimneys on the right range and two on the rear range, all having moulded bases and caps. The school is two storeys high, with the left range gable end featuring vertically boarded doors on both floors and iron steps leading to the first floor.

The courtyard side has five windows on the first floor and four on the ground floor, all consisting of small paned vertically sliding sashes and double doors with two lights and a light above. These windows are framed with wide plain painted stucco surrounds. The central range has a window arrangement of 2:1:2, with matching windows on either side of the gable. There is a central round-headed window with margins and a keystone above double panelled doors that have lights and a light above in a matching surround. A clock is situated at the apex of the gable, which also features barge boards. To the far right, there is a half-glazed door with a window above. The right range has two ground floor windows on the gable end.

The courtyard return includes a five-window range on the first floor, mainly with matching windows, while the ground floor has four circular leaded windows, a red tiled bay with a French door, and a part-glazed door with a light above and side windows on either side. Between each pair of round windows, there is an external chimney stack. The courtyard is enclosed by a red brick wall approximately 2 meters high, topped with round coping and featuring central ornate double cast and wrought iron gates. The courtyard is paved with stone flags.
