Description
This is a 16th-century aisled barn located approximately 30 metres southeast of Wiggens Farmhouse. The barn is timber framed and plastered, with a thatched roof. It consists of three bays aligned roughly north to south and features a lean-to midstrey on the east side. The structure includes jowled posts, cambered tiebeams, and arched braces connecting the tiebeams to the arcade plates. The face-halved scarfs have one end bladed and the other end housed. The aisle ties are jowled to the arcade posts, and there are two raking shores to each arcade post, originating from the aisle tie and sill. The barn has heavy studding and curved tension braces that are trenched to the outside of the studs. The roof is a clasped purlin type, with curved wind braces supporting the purlins, and all rafters are original. Inside the northern bay, there are four 19th-century stable stalls and an inserted floor. The barn shares close constructional similarities with another aisled barn at Bumpstead Hall.
