Description

The Old Marquis is a house dating from the 16th century, with extensions added in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is timber framed and has a roughcast rendered exterior, topped with a roof made of red clay tiles, which are a mix of handmade and machine-made. The building is aligned north to south, featuring an 18th-century extension at the south end and a 19th-century extension at the east side, creating an L-shaped plan.

There are two axial chimney stacks in the original section of the house, along with a 19th or 20th-century external stack on the west wall at the south end. To the north, there is a single-storey lean-to extension with a slate roof facing Camps Road. This elevation includes one splayed bay with three double-hung sash windows, each with 4-6-4 lights, dating from the late 19th century, two additional late 19th-century double-hung sash windows with six lights, and one small casement window from the 20th century. On the first floor, there are three similar sash windows.

Inside, the building features plain-chamfered axial and transverse beams, with some beams boxed in, and a large wood-burning hearth at the north end. The walls of the original structure have been raised approximately 1.5 meters in the 17th or 18th century, and the roof has been rebuilt. The Old Marquis served as a public house, known as The Marquis of Granby, until 1960.
