Description

Bumpstead Hall is a manor house that dates from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is timber framed and cement rendered, featuring a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building has a three-bay range that runs approximately northeast to southwest, with an axial chimney stack located at the southwest end of the middle bay. There is a two-bay northeast crosswing that jetties to the southeast and has an external chimney stack on its northeast wall. Additional 19th-century extensions are present to the northeast, enclosing the stack, and to the northwest, which includes an end chimney stack. There is also a parallel northeast-southwest range to the northwest with an internal chimney stack near the southwest end. Two lean-to extensions are located to the southwest, with roofs made of tiles and slate, respectively.

On the southeast elevation, the ground floor features two French windows and two double-hung sash windows with six lights, all of which are from the late 19th century. The first floor has four similar sash windows. The jetty is completely cement rendered and lacks brackets. Inside, the building has plain-chamfered beams with step stops at the southwest end and broach stops at the northeast end of the main range. The southwest wallplate of the crosswing shows an edge-halved and bridled scarf. The roofs are not accessible.
