Description
The building is a maltings, now used as a cowhouse, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The structure is square with a conical roof and features a lean-to extension to the southwest, which is roofed with slate. There is a two-storey rectangular block to the northeast. The northwest elevation, facing the road, has a four-window range with segmental arches over the ground floor windows, which are slatted externally. There are two plain boarded doors with segmental arches, along with one additional door in the southwest extension. The rectangular block has a hipped roof at the northeast end, featuring two louvres on the ridge, while the square block has a similar louvre and a weathervane. William May, a maltster, is recorded at Gower's Farm in county directories from 1845 to 1863. The maltings is depicted in its current form on the tithe map of 1839, held at the Essex Record Office.
