Description
Clematis Cottage is a pair of attached cottages dating from around 1500 or earlier, with later extensions. The cottages are timber framed and plastered, featuring a roof that is mainly thatched, with some areas covered in handmade red plain tiles.
No. 76 has three bays facing south and includes an axial stack near the right end. It has a 20th-century single-storey wing at the rear, which is roofed with machine-made red clay tiles, and a lean-to conservatory to the left of it. The front of No. 76 features four 20th-century casement windows and a 19th-century horizontal sash window with 12 lights in an eyebrow dormer. The entrance is through a 20th-century gabled porch, also roofed with machine-made red clay tiles.
No. 77, which is slightly wider and consists of two bays to the right of No. 76, is mainly from the 19th century but may incorporate earlier elements. It has an 18th or 19th-century axial stack. The cottage is one storey with attics and has three 20th-century casement windows and one 19th-century horizontal sash window in a gabled dormer. The dormer and part of the main roof are clad with handmade red plain tiles, and there is a 20th-century door. The roof is half-hipped on the right side.
Internally, No. 76 features heavy jowled posts and a crownpost roof with axial bracing. The ceilings have been raised, so only the ground floor is occupied, with access to the loft available only through the dormer window. No. 77 has a 19th-century hearth facing left and a wider wood-burning hearth facing right, and the interior is fully plastered.
