Description

Spa Place, dating from approximately 1736, was built during an attempt to establish a spa at Witham. The building incorporates parts of an earlier timber-framed house, likely from the 17th century. It was probably constructed as a residence for a physician and their patients. The house underwent significant alterations in the 19th century. The north front is now painted brick, while the south front is plastered. The building consists of a central block flanked by lower wings to the east and west. It extends over two storeys and includes a basement. The central block features a three-window arrangement on both the north and south fronts. The wings have a two-window arrangement, with one window blocked on each side. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, set in plain reveals. A central doorway is accessed by steps and has a flat hood. The roofs are slate and hipped over the central block. The interior retains exposed timbers, believed to originate from the 17th century.
