Description

An 18th-century granary and cart shed stands approximately 30 metres northwest of Numbers 1 and 2 Western’s Cottages, formerly recorded in association with Western's Farmhouse. The building is timber-framed with a brick plinth, featuring weatherboarding and a gambrel roof with half-hipped ends covered in asbestos. It comprises a 5-bay cart shed with stairs leading to the granary above situated at the south end.

The east front is open, with later doors inserted into the centre and two right-hand bays. Loft doorways are located in the gable ends, while the rear elevation is blank.

Internally, the walls exhibit straight tension bracing. The floor features unchamfered beams with large curved hanging knee braces to the storey posts, and unchamfered joists. The gambrel roof showcases two tiers of collars; the lower tier uses a tie-beam with curved hanging knee braces clasping the side purlins, while the upper tier features a straight collar with a dovetail lap joint to the principals and a clasped side purlin above. There are common rafters and a ridgeboard. A complete set of boarded grain bins is present, with four bins on each side of a central axial passage.
