Description
Scarlett's Farmhouse is a house primarily from the 17th century, incorporating a late 14th or early 15th century structure of uncertain type, possibly a hunting lodge. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The house has four bays facing northeast, with the earlier structure forming the left bay. There is an axial stack in the second bay from the left, which creates a lobby entrance. A 19th-century external stack is located at the right end, along with a single-storey lean-to extension. Additionally, there is a 20th-century two-storey extension at the rear of the right bay. The building stands two storeys tall with attics, featuring three 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and two 20th-century casements plus one 19th-century casement on the first floor. The entrance includes a six-panel door with the top two panels glazed, and the roof is a half-hipped gambrel style with six rebuilt octagonal shafts. Both storeys are exceptionally high. On the first floor, there is a blocked hearth with a depressed arch. Part of the earlier structure is visible at the rear of the left bay, showcasing a massive corner post with a recessed inner angle, originally taller than the current eaves level, heavy studding with wattle grooves, and two curved braces that are now weathered but were originally on the outside. Other structural elements are likely hidden within the plaster. There is a late 16th-century newel stair featuring a carved oak post, a wide moulded oak rail, and later turned pine balusters. Scarlett's Farmhouse was noted as a mansion with 128 acres in a title abstract from 1618.
