Description
This is an aisled barn dating from the 16th century, located approximately 80 metres east-north-east of Bumpstead Hall. The barn has been altered in the 20th century and is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding, topped with a corrugated iron roof. It consists of four bays that are aligned roughly northeast to southwest, with entrances on both sides in the second bay from the southwest end. The structure features jowled posts, cambered tiebeams, and arched braces connecting the tiebeams to the arcade plates. The face-halved scarfs are bladed at one end and housed at the other end. It has heavy studs, and the end walls include curved braces that are trenched into the outside of the studs. In the aisles, there are two curved raking shores extending from each arcade post to the aisle tie and to the sill. The roof above the tiebeam level was rebuilt in the 20th century to accommodate the lower pitch of the corrugated iron, and the side walls were raised to meet it. The barn shares close constructional similarities with another aisled barn located at Wiggens Farm.
