Description

This is a 19th-century wall located on the north-east side of Church Street in Kelvedon. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring patterns made with gault brick. The wall's height decreases from 2.44 metres at the southeast end to 2.11 metres at the northwest end. It has a red chamfered plinth with three courses of gault bricks above and two courses of gault bricks below a V-shaped coping made of gault. The wall is divided into panels that are 3.66 metres wide, showcasing rusticated vertical patterns of gault bricks, with alternating diamond and diaper shapes made from gault headers within the panels. The north-east side of the wall is simpler, made of plain red Flemish bond without any piers or buttresses. This wall separates the street from the gardens of numbers 1 and Harvesters, Millers Garden, and The Gardens Bungalow. It was built by R.R. Willis in 1854 when he purchased the land behind to use as a garden for his school across the street. The splayed entrance was altered by G. Crowe and Son Ltd in 1983.
