Description

The Church of All Saints is a parish church dating to the middle of the 12th century, with subsequent alterations in the 13th and 16th centuries, and a 19th-century restoration. It is constructed of flint rubble, cement rendered and faced with Barnack stone and clunch dressings. The roof is tiled, with a timber-framed bell turret.

The nave, also dating to the middle of the 12th century, has two 19th-century windows in the north wall and a blocked north doorway with a segmental arch. The south wall contains an early 13th-century recess with a two-centred arch featuring dog-tooth ornament. One side of the arch has a plain respond, while the other incorporates a re-used 12th-century octagonal shaft with diapered faces and a scalloped capital. A 13th-century lancet window is set within this recess. To the west of the recess is a coupled lancet window from the 13th century. A mid-12th century south doorway has a round arch of two orders with chevron ornament and a billeted label; the jambs have two shafts with scalloped capitals, grooved and chamfered abaci, and moulded bases. A 19th-century window is set in the west wall.

The mid-12th century chancel was extended in the 13th century. The east window is 14th century, with three pointed lights and intersecting tracery within a two-centred head. The north wall has a late 13th-century window with a single trefoiled light and a 19th-century window to the west. The south wall has four windows, two of which are 14th century, each with a single cinquefoiled light and a two-centred head with a moulded label. There is also a 13th-century lancet and a 19th-century window. The mid-12th century chancel arch is semi-circular, of two orders, enriched with chevron ornament. The responds are of three orders, with two shafts on each; the inner shafts are octagonal, enriched, and have foliated capitals, while the outer shafts are round with scalloped capitals. Bases are moulded, and a chamfered impost has carved lozenge ornament.

A 16th-century south porch has been largely rebuilt in the 19th century and incorporates reused original brick and timber. The nave roof is from the early 15th century, of three bays and embracing an integral belfry framed on the western tie beam. It consists of raised tie beams with moulded arch bracing and pierced traceried spandrels, high collars with short braced king posts. The chancel roof is braced to collars and ceiled into five cants. The south door is early 15th century with traceried panels. Tomb recesses are present in the north and south walls of the nave, with moulded segmental-pointed arches and labels. One tomb commemorates James Samson, rector in 1349, with an incised figure in vestments, a cusped and crocketed canopy, side pinnacles and marginal inscription. A 16th-century painting of the Annunciation, reputedly by Schiavone, is also present. A 14th-century piscina stands in the chancel, exhibiting a moulded two-centred head, a sexfoiled drain and an oak shaft.
