Description
Hornigalls Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof covered with handmade red plain tiles. The original 16th-century structure features a two-bay crosswing aligned northwest to southeast, with an 18th-century extension built on the site of a former hall to the southwest, and a further 20th-century extension beyond. Externally, the building resembles an aisled hall with two crosswings.
The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic, with the northwest elevation displaying four 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and two on the first floor, along with a 20th-century door. The left crosswing jetties out at the front, while the right crosswing also jetties out to the right. The left crosswing features jowled posts, curved tension braces set into the close studding, and an unglazed window with four diamond mullions on the ground floor of the left return, as well as another on the first floor with restored mullions. There is a shutter groove for an off-centre unglazed window at the front, below the jetty.
Inside, the original partition between the bays includes straight braces set into the studs, and the joists are plain and square in section. In the central part of the house, there is an 18th-century wood-burning hearth facing to the rear. The right end of the 18th-century extension reveals exposed framing with primary straight bracing and carpenters' assembly marks. Some old timber has been reused in the 20th-century right crosswing.
