Description

The stable block, built in the early 19th century, is located approximately 30 metres south-east of Great Bardfield Watermill. Constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and roofed with red clay Roman tiles, this long, single-storey building faces west. It includes (from left to right) one open bay with a modern timber lintel (currently a garage), three stalls with halved doors and two slatted windows, a loose box with double doors, a byre with a halved door and one slatted window, and a cartshed with two open bays. There are single-storey lean-to extensions at both ends, and the floor is made of small yellow bricks. The roof has a low pitch and is boarded, featuring two through-purlins on each pitch supported by queen-strut trusses made of imported pine, with iron king ties and screwed bolts at the eaves angles. Aside from minor alterations to the left bay, the building has retained its original form and all internal fittings. Inside, there are timber partitions between the three stalls, feeding troughs supported on elliptical brick arches, and iron hay racks. The byre contains feeding troughs and neck posts for three cattle, along with two small pens with feeding troughs for calves or goats. This stable block is a rare survival. Thomas Samuel Smith operated the roller flour mill until the 1930s and reopened it during World War Two, continuing to use horse wagons until shortly before his death at the age of 98 in 1950. The stable block is listed for its exceptionally complete condition and for its group value with the Mill and Mill House.
