Description

No. 36 High Street is a building dating from around 1880, featuring two storeys and attics with a parapet, constructed of yellow stock brick. The facade has three windows, which are pairs of double-hung vertical sliding sashes with semi-circular heads. To the south of the entrance, there is a shallow bay window topped with stone coping. The building has a brick plinth with a stone top course, a brick string course, and a moulded cornice made of brick and stone.

At the center, there is a flat-topped portico supported by stone columns with ivy leaf capitals, featuring a round arch made of stone and red brick voussoirs. Above the portico, there is a low decorative cast iron railing. The window heads on the ground floor form pointed arches over the semi-circular openings, which are made of stone and red and black brick. The entrance door consists of six fielded panels and has a clear fanlight above it.

At the rear, the building has a steep red plain tile roof that is hipped at the west end, sitting above a timber-framed wall. There is a wing extending to the north-west, which has an exposed collar and side purlin roof at the gable end. Behind the facade, the building is timber-framed and appears to date back to the 17th century, with some minor alterations and extensions made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The overall detailing of the building is of good quality throughout. This property is included for its group value.
