Description
This barn, located approximately 35 metres north of Secretaries Farmhouse, dates back to the 17th century and was altered in the early 19th century. It features a timber frame that is weatherboarded, with base walls made of red brick and a slate roof. The barn consists of five bays aligned roughly north-south, with a midstrey to the west. There is an open shed in the southwest corner that has a hipped slate roof. The roofs have a low pitch and include a large louvred lantern at the middle of the ridge.
The structure has jowled posts, heavy studding, primary bracing in the walls, and straight braces to the tiebeams, all constructed with fully pegged hardwood up to the wallplate level. The roofs were rebuilt in softwood during the early 19th century, featuring ridge-pieces to accommodate the low pitch of the slate. An estate map from 1796 by John Kingsbury, which is held by the owner, shows the barn's layout. There is also a single-storey range to the west that has been altered for residential use, but it holds less historical significance.
