Description
Fairstead Lodge is an early 19th-century house constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, topped with handmade red clay tiles. The main section features a central entrance and stair hall facing south, with internal stacks at both ends. There is a rear range that includes an internal stack at the end, creating a T-plan, along with a second service area in the northwest angle, which has an internal stack and an external bread oven beyond. The building has two storeys and attics.
On the ground floor, there are four early 19th-century sash windows with 12 lights, some of which contain crown glass, set in recessed semi-circular arches. The first floor features five early 19th-century sash windows with six lights. The central entrance includes a six-panel door topped by a fanlight with radial tracery, all within a recessed semi-circular arch. A moulded eaves course runs along the roofline. In the right roof pitch of the central service wing, there are two early 19th-century two-light windows in gabled dormers, which originally had leaded rectangular lights, although the casements are now missing.
Inside, the original staircase is notable for its wreathed handrail and stick balusters. The main ground floor rooms retain their original folding shutters and 20th-century grates, with one room featuring two recessed semi-circular cupboards flanking the fireplace. Between the two rear wings, there is a blocked window and a high dairy window with narrow diamond mullions.
