Description
This is an ancillary building located 10 metres north-east of Woodhouse Farmhouse, dating from the 18th century and extended in the 19th century. It was used as a bakehouse, brewhouse, and stable. The structure is mainly timber framed, weatherboarded, and plastered, with some red brick in Flemish bond, and has a roof covered with handmade red plain tiles. The building has three bays facing approximately southwest, with an axial internal stack at the right end and a 19th-century stable or cowhouse extension at the rear of the left end. It is a single storey with one reduced-size window aperture and three plain boarded doors at the front. The lower part of the main building is weatherboarded, while the upper part is plastered; the rear extension is also weatherboarded. At the right end, the walls are of brickwork extending a short distance along the front and rear. The roof is hipped at the left end and features shaped sprockets below the eaves.
At the rear, there is an area of original external plaster with inscribed zigzag patterns in panels, enclosed by the rear extension. The building has heavy studding, primary straight bracing, unjowled posts, and face-halved and bladed scarfs in both wallplates. Much of the timber is reused and well reconstructed. There is a cambered tiebeam between the middle and right bays with bolted knees, and the space between the middle and left bays is partitioned with a door. The roof has clasped purlins with collars at half-bay intervals. Inside, there is a wide wood-burning hearth with jambs of 0.33 metre brickwork and a plain-chamfered mantel beam. In front of the hearth is an incomplete bread oven, with a modern brick pier passing through the oven floor but not affecting the roof. Behind the hearth is an emplacement for a brewing vat, which is missing. A 19th-century privy formed with boards has an entrance at the front, while a later brick privy at the rear has no architectural or historic interest. The rear stable features a good brick floor. This building is included for its group value.
