Description
The garden building at the Old Vicarage, dating from around 1855, was originally used as a theatre, photographic studio, and a sham ruin. It is constructed from clay bat and yellow brick, featuring a pantiled roof with a side stack that has two linked diagonally-set shafts. The building has an irregular plan and stands two storeys high. It includes lancet windows with casements, some of which have reset stained glass, and a two-bay loggia. The doorway is framed by a two-centred arch. Attached to the building is a sham ruin made from similar materials. Inside, the ground floor is sunken, creating an undercroft beneath a first-floor room that was originally used for theatrical productions. This building was built by Samuel Widnall, who lived at the Old Vicarage and was known for his local history writings.
