Description
The Waterbeach War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1920 by W Bell and Sons of Cambridge, designed by Captain Long of Messrs’ Atkinson and Long, Cambridge. It is carved from limestone and stands in the churchyard of the Grade II*-listed St John’s Church, overlooking the Grade II-listed Hall and associated barn.
The memorial features a Latin cross atop a tall, tapering octagonal shaft, which is set on a chamfered square plinth. This plinth rests on a four-stepped octagonal base. The third step includes four additional stone steps that commemorate the Fallen of the Second World War. The north face of the cross is inscribed with "HIS," while the south face reads "PAX." The north face of the plinth bears the inscription: "IN GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF / WATERBEACH / WHO FELL IN / THE GREAT / WAR 1914 – 1919. / THEIR NAME / LIVETH FOR / EVERMORE." The additional step below is inscribed: "AND IN THE WAR / 1939 – 1945." The names of the fallen are recorded on the other faces of the memorial, arranged chronologically from west to east, with a total of 45 names inscribed—37 from the First World War and eight from the Second World War.
