Description
Bourn Mill is a post mill that dates back to the early 17th century, with restorations carried out in 1874, 1933, 1961, and 1984. The mill is timber-framed and weatherboarded, featuring a gabled roof, with some materials reused from earlier structures. It has brick piers, two cross trees, and quarter bars added in the 19th century. In 1984, marine plyboard casing and additional weatherboarding were installed by millwright C. Wallis, during which four sails and the mill ladder were removed for repair. The interior contains complete gearing, one pair of stones, and a wooden brake, along with a sack hoist that is driven by a chain from a pulley on the windshaft. The mill is noted in a deed from 1636 and was purchased by The Cambridgeshire Preservation Society in 1932. One of the studs is inscribed with the name E. Bismur and the year 1758. Bourn Mill is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
