Description

The Old House is a house with origins dating back to the 15th century, but it was almost entirely rebuilt during the 17th century in two separate building phases. It underwent restoration around 1965. At the rear, there is a small wing that dates from the 17th to 18th century. The main section to the south is from the early 17th century. The house is timber framed and rendered with plaster, featuring a half-hipped tiled roof and a tall red brick ridge stack with four grouped shafts on a rectangular base. It has two storeys, with the gable end facing the road jettied. There are two 19th-century hung sash windows on the gable end and four on the side elevation.

The adjoining range to the north is from the mid-17th century and replaced an open hall. This section is also timber framed and rendered, with a half-hipped tiled roof. It has two storeys, with the first floor jettied and the jetty beam boxed. Each storey has one hung sash window with sixteen panes. The doorway may have been the original entry to the cross-passage.

Inside, the layout features an open hall with a parlour crosswing that was added or rebuilt in the early 17th century. The open hall itself was likely rebuilt in the mid-17th century. Two pairs of smoke-blackened rafters are still visible in the roof. The parlour crosswing has a queen post roof with paired wind bracing, as well as abutting inglenook hearths and exposed joists that are laid flat and unmoulded.
