Description

South End House is a house, originally a farmhouse to Clear's Farm, dating from the early 17th century, with alterations carried out around 1810. It is constructed of gault brick, with timber-framing and plastering to parts of the building, and has low-pitched slate and plain tiled roofs. The main west elevation comprises two storeys and a basement, while a rear wing represents what was the hall and a cross wing of the original 17th-century, H-shaped house.

The west elevation has a symmetrical three-bay facade. The entrance is approached by steps leading to a five-panelled door with a cast iron patterned fan light, set within a recessed round-headed brick arch. There are two recessed twelve-paned hung sash windows with flat brick arches and painted reveals to the ground floor, and three similar first-floor windows. Chimney stacks are located on the rear and side elevations.

The interior retains some exposed timber-framing from the original building, incorporated into the later plan, and includes a stack. Notable early 19th-century features include an open string staircase with fret balusters, panelled doors, and shuttered windows. Some two-panelled doors are also present, dating to the 18th century.
